What Are Angels?

What are angels?

The term "angel" is derived from the Greek word "Angelos," which means "messenger," and thus being an "angel" is a job, not a personality trait. "Angel is the name of their office, not of their nature," writes Saint Augustine. If you're looking for the name of their nature, its spirit.'"

God created angels as spiritual beings to serve Him. They are extremely powerful beings who serve as God's messengers. Many times in the Bible, they appeared to people and said, "I have come as a messenger from the Lord." An angel is a pure spirit being or substance. Angels have intellect and will, and thus exercise knowledge and love, but they do not have bodies or live embodied lives. Each angel is essentially a center of consciousness without a body, but we must qualify that by saying that angels are conscious in a way that human beings are not.
